FOG Masters

What is masters volleyball?

As far as volleyball in Canada is concerned, the term “masters” refers to athletes 35 years and up. For this season (2010), it includes those born 1975 and earlier.

The masters volleyball movement is gathering momentum in Edmonton and elsewhere. With the World Masters Games right here in Edmonton in 2005, a bunch more people crawled out of the woodwork and the numbers of participants increased.

Why masters volleyball?

Our (Fog Volleyball Foundation) aim is to see the number of participants continue to increase so that more people add to the quality of their lives through being physically active. To that end we offer opportunities to participate in competitive volleyball. There are already in place many opportunities to compete with people your own age in the sport of volleyball. These opportunities serve as enjoyable and motivating events that make it easier to get out and get in shape to play. Rediscover and keep alive your athleticism; restore and maintain your physical abilities and skills; rekindle your competitive spirit. Your body was meant to move. Find your place in the masters volleyball movement.

What opportunities exist?

There are opportunities for participation locally, provincially, nationally and internationally. There are opportunities for players of every level of skill and commitment. Every year players from Edmonton take part in these events.

October 2009 will be the next World Masters Games, this time in Sydney Australia. Volleyball teams from Edmonton will be there. We will assist players getting teams together for this huge international event.

Elite masters athletes periodically take part in international competitions in the USA and Canada.

What is the Fog Masters Volleyball League?

The purpose of the league is to provide masters athletes the opportunity to train with and compete against their peers locally, on a regular basis, up to four times per week.

The league consists of two parts, the weekly drop-in gym sessions that run on many weekday evenings and the Saturday tournament series which consists of 8-12, one-day tournaments in Edmonton. These tournaments are sanctioned by the Alberta Volleyball Association. The league will run from the middle of September to the end of May. Athletes may just show up at any of the drop-in gym sessions and/or enter any of the tournaments as a member of a team (of any size), or as individuals who will then be assigned to a team. Teams and players will take part at whatever level of commitment they are able. This means that you can choose to play as often as you like. If you are out of town for a period of time, no problem.

For gym nights, players should come out expecting to spend 1.5 - 2 hours on the court training and/or playing. There is no cost for these gym nights. Fog Volleyball Foundation sponsors these events.

For the Saturday tournaments, players should expect to play continuously for several hours. No officials will be used and games will be played using the honor system. Entry fees for these tournaments will be $5-10 per team.
The league will be available to any interested masters athlete regardless of skill and commitment levels.

Something new for this season: Players taking part in the tournaments will be asked to register with the Alberta Volleyball Association. This requires that you register on-line at www.albertavolleyball.com. It also requires a yearly fee of $35 payable upon registration. The aim of this is to promote the working together of the athletes, clubs and the Alberta Volleyball Association in the hope of creating even better opportunities to compete.

How do I get involved?

If you are interested in taking part in the league call:

We also want to provide for the development of networks of players who will go on to compete in masters events provincially, nationally and internationally. Players will be made aware of other opportunities to compete and teams may be organized to take part in these events.

If you don’t wish to take part in the league but are interested in taking part in some of the other opportunities mentioned above, contact Darryl

Local

Many masters athletes play in the adult leagues in the city and tournaments throughout the province.

The FOG Volleyball Foundation is running masters gym training/game times.  The FOG Volleyball Foundation is running Saturday masters tournaments in Edmonton and other locations periodically from September to May of each year.

Provincial

There are tournaments operated by the Alberta Volleyball Association, most notably the provincial championships, which are open to masters athletes. In 2006 there were 5 masters teams at provincials. In 2010 we hope to double that number. Playing in this tournament is something any volleyball player can do: we will assist all interested individuals to get out there.

National

Since 2000 Volleyball Canada has hosted Masters nationals each year in May. (with the exception of 2007). In 2009, in Calgary, there were 7 masters teams competing. One of the teams was from Edmonton. We wish to see many more teams out there so that, in the future, more age divisions could be instituted. We will assist interested players to form teams to compete.

International

Each year hundreds of adult teams gather for the U.S.A. Open Volleyball Championships. Many of these teams are masters teams. As an example, in 2006 in New Orleans, 23 teams took part in the 50-year-old men’s division. Two of these teams were from Canada; one was comprised mainly of Edmonton athletes. There were at least 8 Canadian teams in the tournament. The age classes go up to 75 years old. Opportunities are there for participation for as long as you think you are able. We will help put together teams in any age class.

October 2009 will be the next World Masters Games, this time in Sydney Australia. Volleyball teams from Edmonton will be there. We have assisted players getting teams together for this huge international event.
